Windrush 70 and the NHPCSG
North Hampshire Prostate Cancer Support Group
15 September 2018 - Windrush 70 and NHPCSG
Alan and Joan Instone, Ken and Iris Woolgar, with Allan and Jane Roper, set up an NHPCSG awareness stand in the foyer at Popley Fields Community Centre. They were part of a bigger evening event - ‘70 years of Windrush’ - run by the Basingstoke Caribbean Society and Friends.
Our group had been specially invited. The Society was very keen to play a part in raising awareness of prostate cancer locally in the black community. The risk to a black man of getting the disease is as high as one man in four. Quite why it is so high is not really known but may well have something to do with genetics. Advice from Prostate Cancer UK is that, if you’re a black man over 45, speak to your GP about your risk of getting prostate cancer.
The NHPCSG Team gave those attending a good opportunity to visit the stand, talk, ask questions and take away information leaflets in case they needed to discuss any concerns with medical professionals.
The Deputy Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane, Councillor Diane Taylor and the Deputy Mayor’s Consort, Mr Andy Taylor, also visited the stand. They were very interested to hear of the work of the Group and were impressed by what it was doing to raise awareness of the disease in the local area.
